Liberal Democrat councillors have launched a campaign for a new health centre for Saddleworth on what will become the former Saddleworth school site in Uppermill.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Saddleworth North, Garth Harkness said

“The moving of Saddleworth school to Diggle provides an opportunity to use the land in Uppermill for a positive community investment in improving health provision in Saddleworth by including an health centre on what will be the former Saddleworth school site.

They want to see the Oldham council use a community infrastructure levy and capital spending to help Oldham Clinical Commissioning group to bid to the NHS to get the money to improve our health facilities

Alan Belmore, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Saddleworth Parish council said

“A planning charge called the community infrastructure levy is supposed to be used to develop infrastructure within the local area. Large projects that have occurred and are pending will help towards a bid to the NHS”

Councillor Garth Harkness added

“ We of course expect that there would be a desire to use the site for some housing too. We would want to see affordable housing to buy and rent on the site along with a new health centre for Saddleworth to enhance our provisions of health care locally by providing quality and preventative care locally which will reduce a burden on the hospitals and A&E

The Liberal Democrats also want the Oldham Clinical Commissioning group support a new health Centre and offer help with a bid to the NHS.

“We want a joint effort from Oldham council and the NHS to ensure we have a state of the art health centre to offer more services of high quality provision with preventative and primary care on our dooorsteps” said Cllr Derek Heffernan
