Why I am standing

by Garth Harkness on 18 April, 2016

I have been proud to represent Saddleworth North on Oldham Council for the past 4 years. I have also served on the Parish Council and as a governor at Holy Trinity CE Primary School in Dobcross.

Saddleworth is my home, I love it and I want to go on fighting for it. I live in Saddleworth North and know it intimately, which my Conservative challenger does not.   It needs a strong voice and a fair deal.   I pledge to do my utmost.

My work is with autistic children, and before that I taught maths.  So it is not surprising young people figure strongly in my personal ambitions for Saddleworth.   I want better youth services, a new secondary school and to protect our village schools.

But I will also work hard to challenge the council to improve our roads, protect our green spaces and tackle inequality.

My philosophy is to be constructive.  My aim is to solve problems, not just to complain about them.   I believe in straight talking but do not believe that the loudest voices speak truest or work most effectively.  I promise to listen and work with you to make Saddeworth an even better place to live.

Having listened to residents my priorities will be:

  • Protect Saddleworth’s green space and stop over development
  • Improve local health facilities including mental health
  • Improve road surfaces and flood prevention
  • Facilities for  young people
  • A good bus and train service
  • Affordable housing for families
