Liberal Democrat Councillor for Saddleworth North Ward on Oldham Council Learn more

All the countries that are outside of the EU who want to trade in the European Union have significantly worse trade agreements than we do now as being part of the European Union. You can’t I’m afraid, have your cake and eat it. 50 % of what we export goes to the European Union so there is no progressive economic argument to leave. The idea they need us more is not true as only around 10% of their total trade comes to us.
The European Union is not perfect, then Whitehall isn’t, the council isn’t. You can’t change things sat on the side-lines. Of course we would negotiate trade agreements eventually but we would likely be bound by many of the terms but have less influence. There are many unknowns in this referendum. Leaving brings with it much uncertainty. It is highly likely we would have a recession and many years of further austerity. Is the gamble of getting a whole lot worse worth taking in the pursuit of some Disney style Utopia that is pure fantasy?
