Saddleworth Councillor Sam Al-Hamdani bid to be Lib Dem MP

by Garth Harkness on 17 November, 2019

Right: Sam Al-Hamda
Left; Councillor Garth Harkness

In the December General Elcection in Oldham East and Saddleworth, the Liberal Democrats will be represented by Councillor Sam Al-Hamdani. Sam is the Shadow Cabinet Member for Housing on Oldham Borough Council. He is a freelance graphic designer and editor, with clients as diverse as the World Health Organization, the CBI, and the Department of the Environment.

Sam said: “The country is currently stuck at a crossroads. The Conservative Government have spent three years failing to negotiate the first step in an agreement with the EU. If we go through with it, we’ll be stuck in negotiations with the EU for decades. The only clean break available is to stop the process, and look again at what we need to do to actually support people who have been let down by years of Conservative and Labour failures.”

About Sam

Sam is a local Councillor, born and bred in Saddleworth and living in Lees. He is a freelance designer and editor working for clients as diverse as the Fair Tax Mark, the World Health Organisation, Chambers of Commerce and the CBI.

He believes that we need to look to build more engaged communities and society. Too many people in Oldham feel like they have been left behind, by years of national governments who are too focused on London and the South East.

We can deliver a brighter future for Oldham. It requires changing our thinking. We need to ensure that both national government policies and our membership of the European Union deliver for our town.

Oldham should be a place of opportunity, and right now it isn’t. We need to bring our communities together – celebrate the hard-working people who live here and who can make this a diverse, thriving town.

Membership of the European Union can be one part of this. The UK must also deliver a green revolution. If we are ahead of the curve – leading the world in environmental technologies – then a greener economy will also be a growing, positive economy.

A coherent approach to local services is crucial. Whether it is planning, social and health care, education – we need not just funding, but effective funding, and insightful planning. Spending money we don’t have will just make things worse.

Government needs to deliver better. The Liberal Democrats, and a Liberal Democrat MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, can deliver a brighter future for Oldham.
