The “worst ever” planning meeting saw approval for 265 houses to be built on protected land In Saddleworth, with the support of Saddleworth’s Labour Councillor George Hulme.
And there is a new threat. Up to now councillors could refer any contentious planning applications to the Planning Committee to be heard in public. Now Oldham Council has proposed draconian criteria for councillors to do that. This will make it more difficult to challenge officers’ decisions and legitimise ignoring local councillors.
Councillor Garth Harkness said “Oldham council don’t want such scrutiny. Less say for local members, more power to Oldham, more power to unelected officers. Welcome to North Korea!
“We want to protect our precious green spaces. We will not conform and plans to silence us just make us more determined”Leave a comment
